Joint A Cappella Concert

On Wednesday 18 March, the Joint A Cappella Concert brought together pupils from SPS and SPGS in an eclectic programme spanning 17th century polyphony to 21st century pop ballads.

St Paul’s Voices opened the evening with two British folk songs, Bobby Shafto and O Waly, Waly, before The Fourtones — Sam Christie, Louis Ferro, Tolga Mardin (all Upper Eighth) and Josh Knox (Lower Eighth) — injected their trademark barbershop energy into the concert.

Other standout performances included The Morning Breakers, 1904, the SPGS Fifth Form group, and the Joint Sixth Form group (featuring Jihang Xiao and Rohan Malhotra), the latter joined by Dr Evans as a last minute violinist, offering a beautifully sensitive rendition of Something Stupid. St Paul’s Consort followed with poised performances of Byrd’s Ave verum corpus and Sullivan’s The Long Day Closes.

Motley Croon concluded the evening with their customary poise and finesse in a heartfelt performance of Goodbye, My Coney Island Baby.
