St Paul’s Lower Eighth pupil Inian has been recognised by the West London NHS Trust after completing 30 hours of volunteering to support patients through language translation.
Inian recently carried out a “Patient Letter Translation Task” for the Trust, translating a set of standard patient letters used by Musculoskeletal and Physiotherapy clinics into Tamil, French and Italian. The translations help ensure that patients who speak these languages can better understand important medical information relating to their care. In recognition of his work and the difference it will make to patients, the Trust awarded Inian a certificate and a 30-hour volunteering completion badge.
Reflecting on the experience, Inian’s mother, Saranya, shared her appreciation for the school’s support:
“This was possible only because of St Paul’s School’s unique way of channelling pupils’ interests and abilities, which in Inian’s case has been nurturing his linguistic abilities, encouraging him to contribute to the Polyglot and Prometheus magazines and, on a wider level, to contribute to society by emphasising volunteering… We really want to thank the St Paul’s core educational system, and especially the languages department, for nurturing this talent in him.”
At St Paul’s we place significant emphasis on our volunteering programme because we strongly believe in creating meaningful and sustainable partnerships that have a positive impact on society and help others. Inian’s achievement reflects these values. At the same time, it is important to note that this particular initiative was undertaken entirely of his own accord, demonstrating both independence and a genuine desire to use his skills to benefit others.
The school congratulates Inian on this recognition and thanks the West London NHS Trust for providing an opportunity that enables students to contribute meaningfully to patient care and communication.
